Office of Intellectual Property

Patents

The Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) (phone 517.355.2186) assists researchers in protecting innovations and is MSU's negotiating and licensing agent in discussions with private industry. OIP staff help faculty to develop strategies for preserving the patentability of valuable ideas in light of publication and grant-application plans, and counsel faculty on other patent-related questions. OIP staff administer the University's patent policy, and we are authorized to sign confidential disclosure and material transfer agreements, as well as patent documents, on the University's behalf. In keeping with commerical development goals of the State of Michigan, we also help entrepreneurial members of our faculty or the outside community to establish start-up ventures based on MSU's platform technologies, and we help existing ventures to succeed by putting them in touch with Michigan resources and programs.
